And they’re so nervous of doing that, that it makes them not quit, as it were. But what is almost always the case is that, once you actually get through that hard bit and focus just on that, as you say, you become much more resilient, and much more confident. That’s the tip of the iceberg, but the transformation I’ve seen in my life since I’ve stopped has been crazy. And I was like, “Oh my God, what have I done?” Like I understand why young, I understand why young people don’t quit drinking. So a number that I can give you is that in terms of the no and low markets, it’s valued at $10 billion in research, right? And that’s, of course, combining those two categories, but it definitely shows the momentum behind. The interest in no and non-alcoholic spirits and non-alcoholic spirit substitutes.
You know, I have clients, sometimes he’ll say to me, Oh, I really want to stop drinking. And I’m going vegan, I’m trying really hard to be vegan, and I’m taking up exercise, and I’ve gone sugar free. It’s not, it is way more important than not saying those things don’t matter, though.

It’s one of the things that I you know; I talk about a lot in the sober club is this whole idea of needing to step into this new identity of who you really are. Most of us were, you know, we don’t have that level of emotional intelligence. If we’ve been drinking, sometimes it’s with teenagers. And actually, we’re we don’t know how to handle a lot of stuff because we’ve never had to do it without the haze of booze.
So I’ve talked about gender, class, race is also significant here, as well. They thought it sounded dull and boring. They actually liked the term alcohol free because they thought it implied a sense of freedom, a sense of living life without alcohol. But I think that there’s certainly variation and these wider communities are pushing the language of sober, reclaiming the word sober and imbuing it with these kinds of positive associations.
Improved heart health
So, let’s just accept them, and sit with it, and then decide, Okay, from here, well, so in this moment, am I safe? Obviously, that’s the most important one. But in this moment, and I say for other actually tigers, or fire, obviously, if there are run, but otherwise, if in this moment, I’m safe, let’s just sit with that emotion and ask what’s really going on. Whereas of course, for years, what we did was, you know, feel a bit upset about something, and then go, Oh, my goodness, how do I deal with this? You know, the unconscious mind says, well, obviously, you just numb it out right now.
